Ancient British Elm Chopping Board – Certified Provenance & Handmade Craftsmanship
Where Ancient Britain Meets Japanese Philosophy
West Meets East — Wabi-sabi Fusion
The beauty of imperfection. The wisdom of age.
In Japan, the most treasured objects are those that carry time within them — worn, marked, and irreplaceable. Ancient British elm is exactly that material.
Recovered from historic British woodland, each board in the Testament Collection bears the grain patterns, figuring, and natural markings of decades of growth. No two are alike. No future board can ever hold the same history.
What few know is that elm is native to both islands. In Japan, the nire tree has been prized by craftsmen for centuries — its grain strong, its character unmistakable. In Britain, ancient elm carries the memory of hedgerows and historic woodland. Two cultures. One tree. One board.
At Moku, we shape this timber by hand — guided by the Japanese principle that true beauty needs no embellishment. The elm speaks for itself.
At the table, it becomes a centrepiece. Laid with charcuterie, cheese, or simply displayed on a kitchen counter, it draws the eye and starts the conversation. As a serving board, it is exceptional. As an object, it is art.
Every board is accompanied by documented provenance, confirming the origin and authenticity of the timber used in its creation.
This is not simply a chopping board. It is a fragment of British natural history, shaped by Japanese hands and philosophy.
Designed to be used, displayed, and ultimately passed on.
